Thank you to everyone for coming and making our 5th annual event so special.  Each of you made the difference in our success of our mission.  But we want you to know also how meaningful it has been for each of us to be at the parks and have you all tell us how special the event is to you.  Those words just make our hearts soar!  Thank you for telling not just the coordinators, but for those that told the gate volunteers and the scorekeepers, etc.

You have our gratitude for your donations, your dedication, support, your truly big hearts and the spirit that you share with the rest of us!

Scouting at PFTC
spacer (1K)
When we know in advance that college coaches or scouts will be here, we will let you know.  For 2010, we knew shortly before opening day that a local AR school was sending an assistant coach to watch at Gary Hampton park.

Afterwards, we found out that a scout for the Florida Gators was present and approached a team coach about a player on their team.  We didn't know it in advance or we would have shared with you.  We're really pleased for this girl and hope that things go the way she'd like.

It just goes to show you that each player, coach and parent should always be on their best game!  You never know who might be watching!

A Special Tribute Ceremony
spacer (1K)

On Saturday night, we rocked through our ceremonies event.  First Erick from OK Prowlers performed a special Native American blanket dance that raised money towards our benefit.  It was quite a treat!  After that, we announced contest winners and handed out awards to those that were present as well as took photos.

With all the awards handed out, that's when we began our tribute ceremony.  Candy Ward spoke for us as she read each name with honor.....  Each time a name was read out loud, one of our Chicks released a pink balloon into the sky.  We continued though all the list and all the balloons until we had honored all 37 names.

More Event Shirts
spacer (1K)
Our event shirts are always a big hit at Pitch for the Cure.  This year was no exception.  Thanks for the great response!  Our 2010 pre-event shirt sales were more than triple that of the 2009!  We increased the number of shirts we had available at the parks for sales and yet we still sold out.

We've had requests to sell additional shirts, so for a limited time we will do just that!  Instead of ordering them from our regular online ordering system, please drop us an email with your request.  To see the four choices of colors and sizes (Adult & Youth), visit this page:  2010 Shirts and then email us.  (Deadline is August 15th.)

At the Heart of What We DO
spacer (1K)
Pitch for the Cure is a girls' fastpitch softball tournament that raises funds for Chicks Charities but also has additional global ambitions attached to it.  We connect regional youth to fight against breast cancer and empower girls to be active for change in their communities.

The 5th Annual Pitch for the Cure is presented by Northwest Arkansas Fastpitch Softball Association dba Springdale Chicks, in special partnership with Susan G. Komen for the Cure Ozark Affiliate.

Special Ceremonies
spacer (1K)

Would you look at that BIG CHECK!! On Sunday, we were thrilled to present a check to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation in the amount of $37,500.00! Some of you can remember that first donation in 2006 of $10,000 and how awesome that felt, right? Well, this year's donation brings us to a five year total of $100,000!! You should hold this close to you and be proud of what you've done, whether this was your first, second or fifth year to attend Pitch for the Cure.

Recycled Materials
spacer (1K)

Look at everything we kept out of the landfill spaces!  Our recycling project made a huge forward leap this year with the help of:  Coca Cola, the Girl Scouts Diamonds - Springdale Service Unit and Wendy Cravens with the Benton County Recycling Center.

Each year we bring more "GREEN" features to our event.  This year was our best effort in keeping recyclable materials from entering landfill space.

Thank you to everyone that participated...especially those of you that did your part by depositing your bottles into the bins!!  In 2011, the goal will be even higher!!

What About Your Online Photos?
spacer (1K)

Did you take some weekend photos at Pitch for the Cure?  Or is there a team mom that took documented everything from beginning to end and has online photo albums?  Oooo...maybe videos!  We'd love for you to share them with everyone!

Let us know where your pics sit online and we'll make one collaborative page of links with the team names.  Maybe we'll even pic a few to feature.  Show us your team's silly, serious, sleepy, or sideways sides!  We know you have them.

Send us the FlickR, YouTube, ShutterFly, etc. links and we'll collect them all and post them:  eventchair@pitchforthecure.org

First Pitch
spacer (1K)
The first pitch of Pitch 2010 was a great time for me, (Gina).  I'd like to share the story with you all on how this lady came to be the one to throw this first pitch....the same way I've shared it with our own organization.

In 2006, I met Traci Hardig at our first Pitch for the Cure tournament where her daughter was playing.  My immediate impression of her:  super smiley, very friendly, vibrant, huggable, outgoing, funny....and tough.  That last quality was one that she would most definately need.  Traci had just been diagnosed only a month earlier with breast cancer.

That year we had an autographed version of the "I Run For Life" CD by Melissa Etheridge in our silent auction.  The song had only been out for six months, so it was very current and fresh.  For those of us that were already in a campaign against breast cancer or touched by it in any way, the song was very relevant.  Because of my cousin's battle with breast cancer, I was after that CD!  Traci and I bid against each other and I won.  Now every time I see the CD at home, I feel bad that I'm the one that has it but it also makes me think of her.  It makes me remember that every time I saw Traci, I just wanted to scoop her up and hug her.

I've kept track of how things were going each year for Traci.  Her daughter, Jessica, hasn't missed a PFTC.  Traci had cleared breast cancer once, but it came back and in 2009 went into her bones.  While she was fighting it the second time, Jessica's team (Team Arkansas '95) had to come without her.  The team not only placed a full page ad in the program book for Traci in 2009, but they also won 1st place for 14U in 2009.  They went  home and dedicated the trophy to her also!  How sweet was that?!

So a month before our 5th anniversary event, Traci gets a clean scan of health!  She is surviving breast cancer.  What a blessing!  I tell you, she was downright giddy when we asked her to throw the first pitch for us.

It was so thrilling to have her join us on Field 1 and throw out that first pitch of the tournament.  Her daughter and close friends were over.  There was a crowd drawn, the umpires presented it well and the coaches were awesome afterwards.  It was very moving AND she darn near thew a strike!  She really did a great job and it was just very special.  In 5 years, I would say it ties at the top of best PFTC memories for me.

Great job, Traci!  I am so proud of you and deeply blessed to know you through these years at Pitch for the Cure!

At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person.
Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.
